I offer social media consulting services, but I thought I’d provide a guide to help not only my clients but anyone else. It’s a powerful, highly leveraged way to gain customers if done well, and I focus on finding those opportunities to maximize the return on their time using artificial intelligence.

In this guide, we’ll explore the synergies between AI and LinkedIn and how they streamline processes, optimize engagement, and foster valuable connections. Since starting my company, I have done no advertising, and virtually all my business has come from LinkedIn, which I use to showcase my knowledge. It’s been an effective way to build my business and brand.

How Artificial Intelligence is Integrated on LinkedIn

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral component of the LinkedIn experience, offering users efficient tools that streamline processes, maximize engagement, and generate substantial results. Integrating AI-driven tools into LinkedIn marketing strategies enables businesses to automate tasks, optimize campaigns, and attract top talent. There are over 985 million members on LinkedIn.

As professionals, we can harness the power of AI tools on LinkedIn to foster meaningful connections with the right talent and other industry experts. It’s also a very important platform when it comes to promoting businesses.

AI Features on LinkedIn

LinkedIn has recently integrated AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, into various platform aspects, enhancing the user experience and productivity. AI-assisted messages and the Likelihood of Interest metric are two AI-powered features that facilitate rapid and effective task completion for recruiters.

The Likelihood of Interest metric illuminates potential candidates who show a higher engagement level with job opportunities, thereby enabling recruiters and a dedicated recruiter to send targeted InMail messages and enhance overall engagement.

LinkedIn’s ‘Collaborative Articles‘ feature uses AI to foster knowledge sharing and professional development. These articles blend insights from the LinkedIn community and are matched with member experts via the LinkedIn Skills Graph. They are a good way to build authority in a topic you wish to demonstrate your expertise in.

AI Best Practices on LinkedIn

Implementing AI best practices on LinkedIn can significantly boost your professional presence, helping you stay ahead of the competition. Understanding project goals, crafting clear plans, and conducting thorough testing and monitoring are keys to integrating AI seamlessly into your LinkedIn strategy.

This approach allows you to:

  • Leverage AI-driven tools to identify potential customers

  • Personalize customer interactions

  • Utilize AI-driven analytics to measure and optimize sales performance for successful sales on LinkedIn.

Leverage the Experience of LinkedIn Experts

One of the best ways to learn about this is to take thought leader Justin Welsh. He’s a thought leader, and his LinkedIn OS is a great resource for growing your presence. Justin Welsh is not your average entrepreneur; he’s a solopreneur who aims to empower individuals to take control of their work and life. After a decade of contributing to the growth of two Enterprise SaaS companies, each surpassing a $1 billion valuation and raising over $300 million in venture capital, Justin experienced burnout. In a bold move, he and his wife quit their high-paying jobs, bought a house in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and embarked on a journey to redesign their lives. I like Justin; we have a lot in common.

Optimize Your Posts for the LinkedIn Algorithm

LinkedIn Algorithm

Understanding the LinkedIn algorithm is pivotal in creating content that resonates with your audience and increases visibility. The algorithm assesses users’ interests based on the groups, hashtags, pages, and people they follow and evaluates prior interactions to prioritize posts in their feed.

Gaining insights into the algorithm allows you to customize your content, connect with the right audience, and enhance engagement on the platform.

The LinkedIn algorithm is a complex recommendation system that curates the content in a user’s feed. It considers various factors, such as the user’s interests, connections, and engagement history, to display the most relevant posts. With over 950 million members, the algorithm processes billions of posts daily to create a personalized experience for each user.

How the Algorithm Works: A Deep Dive

  • Initial Content Filtering: When you post content on LinkedIn, the algorithm first checks for spam or violations against community guidelines. If the content passes this initial filter, it moves to the next stage.
  • Engagement Signals: The algorithm then observes how users engage with your post. It looks for meaningful interactions, such as thoughtful comments and shares, rather than likes. The more genuine engagement your post receives, the higher it will rank in others’ feeds.
  • Content Relevance: The algorithm also evaluates the relevance of your content to individual users. It considers user skills, location, and past engagement to determine how well your post aligns with their interests.

Strategies for LinkedIn Algorithmic Success

In June 2023, LinkedIn rolled out significant changes to its algorithm. These updates emphasize personal and professional updates, allowing your content to reach a broader audience within your network. The algorithm now prioritizes content that offers valuable insights, advice, or knowledge.

  • Be Relevant and Informative: Craft content that aligns with the skills and interests of your target audience. Use analytics from other platforms to understand what your audience cares about and tailor your LinkedIn strategy accordingly.
  • Optimal Posting Times: Timing is crucial. Post when your audience is most active to maximize engagement. Tools like Hootsuite offer personalized recommendations for the best times to post.
  • Encourage Meaningful Engagement: Ask questions that provoke thought and discussion. This not only boosts your post’s visibility but also provides valuable insights into your audience’s preferences.
  • Avoid Outbound Links: LinkedIn’s algorithm tends to downrank posts with external links. If you must include a link, place it in the comments section. I break this rule all the time but haven’t A/B tested this to see the differences in both styles. I like seeing the link preview in a post personally, but I am sure that I trade optimal results for personal preferences. I am going to start experimenting with posts published on LinkedIn and link back to other content on my website.
  • Craft Original Content: Original posts generally receive more engagement than shared content. Add your unique perspective to make your posts stand out.

LinkedIn Content Criteria for the Best Engagement

  • LinkedIn Posts with 1900-2000 words have the best performance and engagement
  •  rate. This means that long-form content is the king on LinkedIn.
  • A LinkedIn post with an image gets 2x the engagement rate.
  • Posts with Titles of 40-50 characters have the best performance rate.
  • 60% of LinkedIn users actively seek industry insights.
  • Businesses with an active LinkedIn Page receive 5 times more page views, 7 times more impressions, and 11 times more clicks per follower.
  • Businesses that post weekly on LinkedIn see a 2 times growth in engagement.
  • LinkedIn posts with images receive twice the engagement.
  • A study by Okdork shows LinkedIn posts with 8 images receive the most engagement.

Optimal Frequency and Times for Posting on LinkedIn

I adopted this strategy for posting from LinkedIn master, Justin Welsh with some tweaks, and when I am not overcome with helping my clients, I try to adhere to this strategy. Unfortunately, this is a classic case of “The cobblers children have no shoes.” in this case, “Mark’s posting strategy is rarely fully implemented.”However, do as I say, not as I do.

My entire social media strategy for business professionals and tech companies:

  • LinkedIn: 2x per day, Monday through Friday during the U.S. workday (You can use Taplio or Hypefury to automate see below)
  • Twitter (tweets): 4x per day
  • Twitter (threads): 1x per week
  • Weekly Newsletter: 1x per week on Fridays ( you can do this on LinkedIn, but I use Substack for The Artificially Intelligent Enterprise) I usually try to follow up and make this a LinkedIn post with the link to the newsletter on Mondays.
According to a study by SproutSocial, these are the best times to post on social media.

Best times to post on Social Media

Here’s another breakdown on the best times to Post on LinkedIn for engagement from Sprout Social.

Based on Sprout Social data, a heatmap showing the best times to post on LinkedIn globally in 2023

  • Best times to post on LinkedIn Company Pages: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon
  • Best days to post on LinkedIn Company Pages: Tuesdays through Thursdays
  • Worst days to post on LinkedIn Company Pages: Weekends

Engaging on LinkedIn, Being Human with AI

Beyond posting, I spend about 45 minutes a day interacting with my audience. Combining AI tools with authentic human engagement is the key to fostering meaningful connections and interactions on LinkedIn. AI can be utilized to personalize connection requests, using technologies such as ChatGPT to craft messages tailored to the recipient, considering shared interests, mutual connections, and recent accomplishments to increase the likelihood of request acceptance.

AI-powered chatbots, integrated with ChatGPT, can be of great help to enhance your LinkedIn conversations. They can provide prompt and tailored responses to inquiries, disseminating pertinent content as well as fostering relationships with your connections. AI tools can revolutionize LinkedIn campaign performance by personalizing content and automating tasks. This helps to increase engagement rates significantly.

AI Tools for LinkedIn

Various AI tools are available for LinkedIn, designed to optimize content creation, automate processes, and improve outreach. Content creation tools like ChatGPT Plus, automation tools like Taplio, and outreach tools like Phantom Buster and Bardeen are just a few examples of AI-driven solutions that can help you achieve your professional objectives on LinkedIn.

You should also understand what kind of content provides the best results on LinkedIn. According to a study by Social Insider on LinkedIn content performance, here are the LinkedIn CTR benchmarks for the other post formats available within the platform:

  • Native documents: average LinkedIn CTR of 11.50%;

  • Multi images: 9.19% average LinkedIn click-through rate;

  • Text posts: 6.11% LinkedIn average CTR;

  • Polls: 3.10% LinkedIn average click-through rate;

  • Images: 2.82% average LinkedIn click-through rate;

  • Post shares: 2.30% average LinkedIn CTR;

  • Find beneficial resources to share with your connections

  • Position yourself as an expert in your field

  • Augment your presence within the LinkedIn community.

ChatGPT for LinkedIn Posts and Articles

Sometimes, writing a LinkedIn post is hard not because of what you want to say but organizing and creating a concise post that gets your point across. This is where ChatGPT shines.  Here are a couple of prompts I have worked on to help reduce the time for creating a LinkedIn post. It’s more of a copy editor than a writer. I often use the prompt to create it and then continue to chat with ChatGPT to refine the post, asking it to reformat and rewrite parts that just don’t seem to work.

Prompt: Authoring a Post using ChatGPT Plus and GPT-4
Sometimes, I have writer’s block. I know what I want to discuss but not how to say it. That’s when I used this prompt to inspire me. I use the prompt below and then replace the {TOPIC] based on what I am interested in. You can also use a URL and web browsing capabilities through plugins on the GPT-4 model of ChatGPT Plus.

You will act as an experienced LinkedIn Social Media Expert and Business Analyst. You will write engaging an engaging LinkedIn post that provides value or insights on a topic. Write the post in English.

- You approach serious topics related to business, and productivity in a professional way to make them more accessible to the general public.
- You must use emojis in each paragraph.
- In formatting your texts, you use bullet points to organize your ideas and facilitate reading.
- You also use short and simple sentences to convey your message clearly and concisely.
- Overall, your tone is optimistic and encouraging, with a touch of humor.
- Use a question at the end of your text to engage your audience and elicit their reaction. You consistently encourage interaction by inviting your audience to comment and share their own experiences.'
- Include six relevant hashtags at the end of the post.
- You will ask me if I want to add a link to a relevant article, if I provide a URL you will use that URL in the post.
- Now, I would like you to write a LinkedIn post in my style on the following topic: [TOPIC].

Create a LinkedIn Post from a URL with ChatGPT and Plugins

One of my most common tasks is to create a LinkedIn post to point back to a blog post. I typically write a lot of long-form content that’s too much for LinkedIn, and frankly, I want to build all my content on my company website, using the following prompt with ChatGPT Plus with web browsing or plugins like Web Pilot will create a blog post from a URL. I like to use the convention of brackets for variables in my prompts. In the following prompt, you will replace the [URL] with the URL you want to create a post for.  The results will be a post that you may need to tweak, but it’s a huge time saver and a good way to create LinkedIn posts to promote your content.

You will act as a social media expert. Generate LinkedIn Post in English from a URL, use a plugin or web browsing.

- Write like a Professional LinkedIn Content Creator with 15+ years of experience.Generate LinkedIn Post in English from this URL: [URL] use a plugin or web browsing.
- Create a compelling LinkedIn Post that drives engagement.
- Don't use words like "Introducing, Exciting Announcement, In the real of, In a world" in the starting line.
- Please use related emojis. Also, try to engage the audience in the post + try something that other users want to comment on the post. Try to keep Lines short and engaging.
- Don't use more than 4-5 sentences in full content, if exceeded due to long content try to summarize and fit into 4-5 sentence max.
- Also, use best practices for LinkedIn SEO and try to meet all requirements
- Make sure that content is 100% Original and Plagiarism free.
- Use bullet points in the middle and keep it short and concise.
- Create a call to action to read more and create a hyperlink to the image.
- After that Also give 6 related hashtags for LinkedIn.

Social Images with DALLE-3

Since the release of DALL-E 3 I have been using it more and more frequently to create images for my posts and presentations. I will say that it’s seen big improvements over DALL-E 2 but it’s still not the best in my opinion. I am still a fan of  Midjourney but it does some advantages.  For example, it’s probably the best vision model I have seen for creating text as part of the image but it’s still wrong more than it’s right. For all the images that aren’t screenshots in this post I used DALLE-3

Automation Tools

Before I go any farther I’d like to point out that some tools are not within the guidelines of the LinkedIn policies especially automated tools that can be a security risk. Though content creation tools and posting tools like SproutSocial, HootSuite, and others seem to be okay as they leverage the LinkedIn Developer API.  This is from the

LinkedIn is committed to providing our members with a community that is trustworthy, professional, safe, and respectful. We’ve outlined what we mean by each of these values in our Professional Community Policies, and established guiding principles on how we maintain member trust. We also set up our User Agreement to transparently lay out our terms of service and help us establish a globally supportive community.
Part of being professional, honest & authentic, and relevant means not using unauthorized third-party software on LinkedIn. We don’t permit the use of any unauthorized third-party software in order to keep our members’ data safe and our website free from fraud and abuse.

Automation tools like the ones I describe here and  can streamline your LinkedIn workflow, automating tasks such as scheduling posts  and monitoring analytics. Automation tools help you conserve time and effort, freeing you to focus on other facets of your LinkedIn strategy.

AI-Generated LinkedIN Posts from Taplio

I particularly like the analytics that Taplio provides via a browser plugin showing the trends for my posts. You can see the Taplio icon in the upper right corner and the Taplio analytics are highlighted in the red box in the image below.

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile

Optimizing your LinkedIn profile with a blend of AI and best practices can enhance your online presence, making you more visible to potential employers and clients and attracting more opportunities.

AI-driven tools can assist in identifying the most effective keywords for your industry and profession and provide keyword optimization, headline suggestions, and personalized content recommendations.

Profile Picture and Background

A professional profile picture and background can make a strong first impression on your LinkedIn profile, setting you apart from others and helping to build trust with potential employers, clients, and colleagues.  Your photo is your virtual handshake, so upload a photo that aligns with your role as a professional but that makes you approachable. LinkedIn members who include a profile photo receive 21x more profile views and up to 36x more messages. Here’s my profile for example that I ahe optimized.

LInkedIn Profile Heading

Ensure your profile picture is clear and of high resolution and that your background is professional and relevant to your industry to maximize your profile’s impact. One of the most important things on your LinkedIn Profile is your LinkedIn banner. To make sure that it’s clear and eye-catching as well as an opportunity to help provide more information to visitors to your profile.

The maximum size for your personal LinkedIn page banner is 1584 pixels wide x 396 pixels tall. The file size for the cover image can be up to 8 MB. LinkedIn accepts these file types: JPG, GIF, and PNG.

Here are a couple of ways to make the banners using artificial intelligence.

  • AppyPie Free AI LinkedIn Banner Maker – Create LinkedIn Banner Images, Videos, and animations using AI LinkedIn Banner Generator.
  • Designs.AI LinkedIn Banner Maker  –  You can use Designs.AI to create a banner for free.
  • Use DALL-E 3 as part of ChatGPT Plus (or Bing Image Creator for a free alternative) – You can use DALL-E to create a LinkedIn Banner, but unfortunately, you will not be able to create a banner that adheres to the exact size needed for LinkedIn. So, if you go to this route you will likely need to crop and resize the image. Given that these images are rasterized they can’t be resized without some distortion.

Headline and Summary

Crafting a compelling headline and summary for your LinkedIn profile can showcase your expertise and value proposition, making it more attractive to potential connections and aligning with the desired job description. AI tools like ChatGPT can offer AI-generated suggestions to help you create eye-catching headlines demonstrating your strengths, accomplishments, and unique selling points.

Alongside AI utilization, manual optimization of your headline and summary is crucial, which involves incorporating pertinent keywords, being precise and descriptive, and steering clear of keyword stuffing. Ensure your headline and summary are concise and attention-grabbing to maximize the effectiveness of your LinkedIn profile.

ChatGPT Prompt to Create a LinkedIn Headline and Abstract

You can even use LinkedIn to improve your LinkedIn Headline and abstract to help make it more appealing and increase engagement. I find it hard to write about myself as I am not much of a braggart, but using ChatGPT Plus with web browsing allows you to update your LinkedIn profile. I used the following prompt to tune some personal profiles for friends.. The interactive prompt will interview the user and provide a draft of the headline and About/Bio for your LinkedIn Profile.

Write in English. Act as a copywriter expert in LinkedIn about/bio sections; you will help me re-write my LinkedIn headline and about/bio from the my LinkedIn URL.

You will do the following:

- Start with a succinct but compelling LinkedIn Headline (maximum character length of 220)
- Write a LinkedIn Bio (3-7 paragraphs based on the diversity of my background, 2600 characters maximum)
- Uses a keyword-rich skills list in the LinkedIn Bio, if my profile has skills endorsements that are relevant to the narrative of my bio then use them.

**Here is an example of a great LinkedIn About/Bio:**

I caught fire coding.

I always thought my dream was to be a proofreader for a little indie publishing company, sipping my cafe con leche and reading the opening lines to the next best-selling vampire novel. It seemed like an appropriate dream given my BA in English. I gravitated toward proofreading and quality control positions and even started my own proofreading business. But I kind of just felt meh. I yearned to learn more, yearned to learn something different.

And that's when it happened; the spark I was missing ignited the instant I clicked play on my first Python tutorial video. (I mean seriously, how could it not be great when it's named after Monty Python's Flying Circus?) Since then, I can't get enough. Web development calls to all my passions; it incorporates creativity and problem solving and I'm allowed to break it to improve the code (in a separate Git branch, of course).

I love applying responsive design principles and watching my web pages shrink into mobile screens and still look amazing. It's oddly satisfying. I think in a way I'm kind of like those web pages; I'm moldable, but I still keep my creative flare intact.

My specialties include quickly learning new skills and programming languages, problem solving, domain driven design, responsive design principles, website optimization, and the Model View View Model (MVVM) and Model View Controller (MVC) methods of organizing code. So far I have C#, .Net Framework, SQL, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Angular, and Git/GitHub under my belt. I'm still enthusiastically grabbing onto any other programming languages, frameworks, or principles I can integrate into the coding web in my head.

Now ask these questions one by one; ask the 1st question and then let me answer; then, ask me the second question, then ask me the third question and then the fourth and finally ask me the fifth question.

1. What is your expertise?
2. Who is your target audience?
3. What are the pain points of your target audience?
4. What value do you bring in ?
5. What is the URL of your LinkedIn Profile?

After all questions are answered create a draft of a LinkedIn Headline and About/Bio.
